St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Soonoro Cathedral, popularly known as Angamaly Cheriyapally, is an ancient monument of paramount historical significance to the global Christian community. Believed to have been established in 409 AD, this magnificent sanctuary served as the prominent seat of the Archdeacons of the Malankara Nasrani Christians for centuries. It witnessed monumental events, including the post-Coonan Cross Oath elevation of Mar Thoma I. Housing the sacred Soonoro (Holy Girdle) of Saint Mary, the cathedral beautifully blends indigenous Kerala architecture with Syrian liturgical traditions, standing as a living testament to faith, resilience, and early Christian roots in India.
